Chocolate Covered Date Monsters- A healthy little snack.

Hi there, everyone. It’s almost time for Halloween and I am all set. Costumes are ready and so are the snacks and treats. Today I am sharing with you all a quick and delicious recipe for this Halloween. Not to forget it’s healthy too. I have covered dates with chocolate. The combination worked so well, that it was an instant hit with my little girl.

A few days back I asked my little munchkins, what she wanted to make for Halloween in terms of food. She said, “Mama, let’s make a monster”. So I started thinking about what can be simple to make, yet healthy for her. She loves dates and munches on them. So I thought of covering them with chocolate and turned them into Monsters. This was a mother-daughter cooking experiment, which turned out so much fun.

I wanted to make them look scary, but they turned out to be cute. More like little Minions. Whatever they looked like, my daughter loved the result. I made one batch, and now it’s become one of her favourite snacks.

This recipe is extremely simple. I started by simply melting the dark chocolate. Then added vanilla extract, coconut oil (to give lustre to the melted chocolate) and cinnamon powder. The combination of vanilla and cinnamon gives a beautiful aroma to the melted chocolate.

Further, I dipped Medjool Dates in the melted chocolate, one at a time and decorated with Halloween confectionary. I let them set in the refrigerator till the chocolate is hard. That’s it. Easy and fun to make. This is a perfect recipe to make with your little ones. Just make sure you get the seedless variety of dates.

Let’s go through the recipe.

 My little notes:

While shopping for dates for this recipe, look for the seedless variety. Many a times dates are treated with sulphates which extend shelf life. Try to avoid these and buy organic dates. Also before using dates for any recipe, it’s always a good idea to wash them well, just to get rid of any additives of there are any.

If the dates are too big for this recipe, you can cut them in half and coat them with chocolate.

Make sure the dates are soft, dried dates will be hard to eat. When covered with chocolate they will get more hard in the refrigerator.

Dates are a good source of vitamin B6, folate, carbohydrates, dietary fibre, protein, potassium, and magnesium. It helps in boosting energy, maintain healthy bones and aid in digestive health.

Oh yes, the combination of dark chocolate and sweetness of dates goes very well. It balances the overall flavour of the treat. You can add any topping on the chocolate that you like. 🙂

Now those are adorable! i bet my 4 year old niece and nephew would love having those and in fact would enjoy making them too. I just dread the mess they would leave 😀

Such a fun treat for Halloween parties! These look just scary enough, but not too scary! I’m thinking of school parties where you don’t want to send the kids home to have nightmares lol ..
