Peas With Me, a nutritious meal for babies 8 months and above.

Today morning we woke up with no internet connection. I had a day ahead of me with absolute ‘No Distractions’. No tv, no phone calls, no aimlessly surfing through various websites. It was just me, my daughter and writing.

I crave for such days at times. So with a lot of time in hand, I thought of making something with vegetables for my daughter for lunch. I didn’t have many options though.

Groceries was on a ‘To Do’ list but was not taken care of. I had celery and peas. Hence thought of working with them. I steamed celery and peas along with little bit of cumin powder. She just loved it. It had a wonderful green color with the aromatic flavor of celery and smell of cumin. It turned out to be an easy quick lunch option.

Let’s talk a little bit about celery and peas. Celery and peas are both full of health benefits. They have various antioxidant, anti-inflammatory properties.

Celery supports the cardiovascular and digestive well being while peas also help in blood sugar regulation and protect against stomach cancer. They both are full of vitamin A, vitamin B2, vitamin B6, vitamin C, calcium, folate, fiber, just to name few.

According to the Environmental Working Group’s 2014 report “Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides,” conventionally grown celery is among the top 12 fruits and vegetables on which pesticide residues have been most frequently found.

Hence it is best to buy celery which is grown organically, especially for babies. Choose a celery that’s crisps and snaps easily when pulled apart. Its leaves should be nice green in color.

Store celery in your refrigerator for maximum 7 days. For peas, we hardly get those in pods. So its either frozen or canned. I usually buy the frozen ones. It retains its color more and is equal to being fresh.

Besides vegetables, the spice used in this recipe has its own health benefits too.

Cumin is a helpful immune function, good digestion and cancer prevention. Its full of iron, calcium, vitamin B. If possible buy whole cumin seeds then powder, as it retains its flavor and aroma for a long time.

One can easily get those in spice stores, Indian grocery shops, and supermarkets. I usually buy whole cumin seed, roast them a bit, powder it and store. Roasting helps in bringing out its nice nutty, spicy aroma. Enough said about veggies and spice, let’s start cooking. Heres the recipe for Peas With Me.
