A nutritious puree of pear and raisins for babies 8 months and above.

Pear is quite a versatile fruit for babies. It can be paired with different fruits and vegetables. I have tried various combinations with my baby and she loved most of them.

Since it’s an easily digestible fruit, it is considered to be one of the best introductory foods for babies from 6 months and above. In the following recipe, I have combined pear with raisins and added a little bit of cardamom powder to it.

Cardamom powder gives a mild sweetish aroma to this puree. Raisins have a high fiber content. Hence adding little raisins to your baby’s food can help relieve constipation.

At the beginning of 1500’s, European Colonist introduced pears to native North Americans. The colonist continued importing pears from Europe.

Today in The US, the state of Washington is the largest grower of pears, followed by California and Oregon.  Pears are one of the best sources of fiber and they help prevent constipation.

They also contain vitamin C, vitamin K, and copper. Pears are gentle on little tummies, thus are good for babies who may be suffering from Reflux. They contain two types of sugars, glucose, and fructose.

A pear’s skin is easily digestible, so it’s ok to leave the pear skin on. Unless you are feeding a young infant.

While shopping for pears, look for the ones with smooth skin and gently yield to touch when pushed. If they are little hard, then they can ripen at home.

Avoid buying pear with soft spots, bruises or having any puncture marks. According to “Environmental Working Group’s 2006, “Shoppers Guide to Pesticides in Produce”, pears are the ones with highest pesticide content in produce.

So it’s advisable to buy organic pears as far as possible for baby food.
