Black Grapes And Mixed Berry Juice

A deliciously refreshing summer drink with a little touch of cumin.

It’s summertime. We seek out for something cold and refreshing during these hot summer days. This holds true for kids too. So instead of giving them something with additives and preservatives, serve them drinks that are fresh and nutritious.

Previously I had shared two drink recipes. One was Orange and Pineapple Juice, and the other one was Kiwi Pineapple Punch. So keeping the summer and fruits in mind, today I have come up with a refreshing juice recipe which is good for both kids and adults. It is a healthy and nutritious way to beat the summer heat.

In the following recipe, I have mixed black grapes and berries (strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, and blueberries) with a little honey for sweetness. I have added few pinches of cumin powder to this juice, just to give it a little nutty, earthy flavor, but it is optional. You can skip that. This can be a fun drink for summer parties.

Black grapes are one of my favorites. They are a good source of vitamin B2, vitamin K, vitamin E, fiber, and copper. Black grapes have various cardiovascular benefits and help in brain function. They have a high content of flavonoids.

Flavonoids give their rich taste as well as provide other health benefits. Another important element that black grapes have is Resveratrol. It is a natural anti-pathogenic compound which is found on the skin of black or other dark-skinned grapes. Resveratrol is also found in other fruits and vegetables which have a reddish pigment.

Resveratrol is believed to enhance longevity, due to its effect in slowing oxidization of cells and molecules. This property also offers protection against degenerative conditions like cancer. Those grapes that are deep purple or black in color contain the highest concentration of resveratrol.

Black grapes are considered to be the healthiest as compared to other grape varieties. Grapes do come under the category of Dirty Dozens, so buying organic grapes is much better.

Berries to have their share of health benefits. Berries are a good source of vitamin A, vitamin B, vitamin C, fiber, manganese, potassium, calcium, folic acid, magnesium, copper, and iron. They are loaded with antioxidants and immunity boosters.

Right now strawberries, raspberries, blueberries are in season so using these is a good idea. Some of these berries (strawberries) do come under Dirty Dozens, so going for organic strawberries is advisable.

For the adult version of this drink, mix this juice with your favorite alcohol. Before serving,  I like to coat the glass rim with little salt and cumin powder and enjoy it chilled.

Next week EasyBabyMeals will be celebrating its 1st Birthday. I am already excited about it. We have come a long way. Thanks to all of you for such love and encouragement. Have a great weekend ahead.

Recipe Notes

  • I usually don't strain this juice, when serving it to my daughter. Just to add little more fiber.
  • If you are planning to serve this juice to infants below 1-year-old, skip the honey. Honey is not good for babies.
  • Cumin adds little earthy nutty flavor to the juice. You can skip cumin powder if you wish to.
  • Adjust the amount of honey or sugar according to your preference.
